Working with Advantage+ audience when broad targeting is the default

Advantage+ audience treats most of your targeting inputs as suggestions. Which controls stay firm, when to switch to original audiences, and how to test either choice.

Meta's audience setup has been moving for some time toward letting the delivery system decide who sees your ads. In Ads Manager, Advantage+ audience is now the default method of audience selection, with the option to switch to original audiences. The change that matters for how you work is a quiet one: under Advantage+ audience, most of the inputs you used to treat as fences become suggestions.

This article covers which inputs still bind, how to feed the system useful hints, and how to decide between the two modes with a test and not an opinion.

Know which controls are fences and which are hints

Jon Loomer, a long-time independent Meta ads trainer, documented the difference in a guide published in May 2024. According to that guide, with Advantage+ audience the hard limits are locations, minimum age, languages and excluded custom audiences. Suggestions, which Meta can go beyond, are custom audiences, lookalike audiences, age range, gender and detailed targeting. With original audiences, locations, age range, gender, languages and excluded custom audiences are firm, while options such as Advantage detailed targeting and Advantage lookalike may expand reach, and for some optimization goals cannot be turned off.

Two consequences follow. First, if you must keep ads away from certain people, use an exclusion or a location, because an age range or gender is only a hint in the new mode. Second, detailed targeting is no longer a filter. Think of it as a statement of who you think the buyer is, which Meta may or may not follow.

Give the system better starting points

If the algorithm is going to widen your audience anyway, the quality of your suggestions matters more than their precision. Some rules we would follow:

  • Use a seed list of your best users, not all users. A custom audience of people who paid, or reached a later activation step, points the system toward value. A list of every install points it toward volume.
  • Keep suggestions few. A stack of overlapping interests tells the system very little. Pick the two or three that describe your best customer.
  • Optimize for an event that reflects value. Without suggestions, Meta uses your pixel data, conversion history and prior ad engagement, according to Loomer's guide. A weak conversion event gives broad targeting nothing to work with.

Control the creative, since it now does the targeting

With broad delivery, the ad itself tells people whether it is for them. A message that names the use case, the plan or the user will draw a different audience than a generic one. If you want to reach a particular person, say so in the first line and the first second of the video. Segment your creative by message angle, and let the report show which angle brings which people.

Decide between modes with a split test

Do not switch an entire account on a hunch. Meta's A/B test tool can compare an Advantage+ audience ad set against an original audience ad set with the same creative, optimization event and budget. Keep the rest identical:

  1. Choose one campaign where you have enough conversions to read a result. Thin campaigns produce noise.
  2. Build two ad sets with the same budget and identical ads. Change only the audience mode.
  3. Decide the decision metric first, preferably cost per paying user or return on spend, not cost per install.
  4. Run the test long enough for both ad sets to exit learning, and check the result against delayed conversions before declaring a winner.

Expect the answer to vary. Accounts with strong creative and a clean conversion signal often handle broad delivery well. Accounts with a narrow niche, strict compliance needs or a weak signal may do better with original audiences and firm age or gender limits. Both outcomes are reasonable, as long as you picked the mode on evidence.

Watch for these warning signs

  • Install volume rises but paying users do not, which suggests the system is finding cheap actions rather than valuable ones.
  • Delivery skews heavily to one age group or region within your allowed limits. Check the breakdowns weekly.
  • Frequency climbs on a small seed audience while reach stays flat.

Practical takeaway

Treat Advantage+ audience as a system that learns from your signal. Tighten the signal, simplify the suggestions, put the targeting message in the creative, and run one clean test before you move the whole account either way.
